AWARDED FUUKIRAN (賞と富貴蘭)

Why are the types of Fuukiran listed as "varieties" with a different clonal name?  In short, the use of the "variety" nomenclature is a standard used by the major orchid societies (American Orchid Society and Royal Horticultural Society of the UK, etc.) representing variability in a species.  Neofinetia falcata, as a species, has enough "genetic drift" to allow for distinct vegetative and / or flower characteristics that are significantly different from the original holotype but not enough differences to warrant the creation of a new species.  Eric A. Christenson, Ph.D., a world expert orchid taxonomist, confirms the naming of Neofinetia falcata varieties.  (A second and third species of Neofinetia does exist and are Neofinetia richardsonara and Neofinetia xichangensis.)

Secondly, orchid judging societies use "clonal" names so awarded plants can carry a unique designation.  A possible alternative would have been to assign a unique "number" at the time of the award, like a drivers license or social security number.  Names are much more feasible and easy to remember, hence their use today.

Orchid nomenclature is highly structured and strictly practiced.  By no means is this meant to be disrespectful of growers, researchers or vendors of any orchids.  It is meant to simplify a very complex family of plants.

As always, please email me if you have comments.  Thanx!!!
