FLOWER FORMS (花は形作る) OF THE FUUKIRAN

The flowers of the Fuukiran vary is color, size, number and configuration.

Type species:  The most common flower form is an open star shaped flower that is usually white and has a very long slightly curved nectary.  The inflorescence usually carries 4 to 6 flowers and at dusk and predawn, a very strong pleasant vanilla aroma is noted.  In nature, this flower is pollinated by a nocturnal moth that is drawn to the white color and strong aroma.

Color:  The flowers are also found in various shades of green, yellow, pink and magenta.  Therefore, the Japanese Fuukiran society has grouped these flowers by color into "systems".  In additional to the "typical white" flowers, the current color systems are the pink/magenta system, yellow/green system.

Configuration:  Not all of the Fuukiran flowers have the typical appearance as described above.  In fact, a large number of Fuukirans have flowers that vary significantly from the usual appearance.  Again the Japanese horticulturists and the Japanese Fuukiran Society have placed the different configurations into distinct categories.  The flowers of the Fuukiran can be divided into three general categories based on appearance. Most of the flowers are forward facing, open, flat to recurved and star shaped with a long nectary. In fact, this is what most western world orchid growers commonly assume is the only appearance of a Neofinetia falcata flower. This appearance is usually referred to as standard or common valve in the Japanese literature with the valve meaning the nectary. Therefore, the three sub designations of small valve, medium valve and long circular valve are in reference to the nectary’s, configuration. Occasionally, the flowers fail to have the typical forward configuration and, instead are directed upwards, the second general category. This appearance is designated as heaven direction or heaven flowering and is usually associated with the Fuukiran that have bean shaped leaves. The third category is the most diverse and has been the subject of debate among some American Orchid Society Judges questioning the validity of species identification. These wonderfully unusual plants are Neofinetia falcata orchids, confirmed by a taxonomical expert. The sub classifications associated with this third category includes step (fasciation), butterfly, cone, non spur (reverse pelorism), counter heaven spur (or reverse spur) and odd flower.
